In order to diagnose eye disease, the intraocular pressure (IOP) must be measured. The diagnostic procedure known as intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement is necessary for a thorough eye checkup.
First, some fundamental physics The definition of pressure is “force per unit area.” For instance, a gas will exert pressure because of the force of its moving atoms striking the surrounding container. Although fluids are similar, each has certain special characteristics. A static fluid’s pressure depends on its depth, density, and gravity when it is at rest. The pressure exerted by a static fluid when it completely fills a container is distributed evenly across the container (the atoms of the liquid act like one giant enclosed object).
The eye can be visualised as a fluid-filled, curved container with an internal static pressure. Therefore, an IOP can be determined at any location along the container (such as the cornea) that has been precisely flattened. A tonometer can be used to apply and precisely measure the flattening or bending force required to measure IOP.
