Envenomation from a snakebite is a serious emergency. It is crucial to diagnose problems quickly and address them appropriately. Other than keeping the animal quiet and limiting its movement, owners shouldn’t spend much time on first aid.
Because the symptoms of venom start to manifest themselves shortly after envenomation, intensive therapy should start as soon as feasible. Shaving bite locations and properly cleaning wounds with germicidal soap are recommended. The leading edge of tissue swelling for animals bitten by crotalids should be documented on the skin with a skin marker at regular intervals to track the tissue injury’s spread. All patients who have been bitten by a snake should be closely watched for at least 24 to 48 hours (crotalides to elapids) to look for the emergence of clinical symptoms.
